Structure and Categories of Memberships

The Institute has five (5) structures of persons categorized as members of the institute, namely,

  • Institutional Membership
  • Corporate Membership
  • Fellow Chartered Economists (FCE)
  • Associate Chartered Economists (ACE)
  • Junior Executive Economics (JEE)
  • Students Membership

Institutional Membership

After having considered these broad criteria, if an institution/Organization believes it is in the position to submit an application, the President, Director-General, Dean, Vice Dean or Director of the Faculty/Institution/Programme must submit an online inquiry. After the inquiry has been received, the Executive Head will share it with the ICEN’s Membership Committee and or the Council to peruse.

If the institution/organization appears to meet the eligibility requirements, the organization or institution will be invited to submit a full application, which shall include the following:

(i) Letter of application from your organization/institution.
(ii) Copies of official documents detailing the mandate, scope and governing structure of your organization/institution.
(iii) Information on the activities undertaken by your institution/organization that indicates the competence of your institution in matters relating to anti-corruption, international trade, investment and, economic and or commercial services, etc, etc,…
(iv) Information on the affiliation of your institution with other professional bodies/organizations, national or international governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations or institutions involved in economics, anti-corruption related programmes and or activities.
(v) Fully completed application form with contact information of your institution/organization and of a designated contact point, Preferably the President/or Chairman/or Director-General/or Dean or Director for official communication with the secretariat.
(vi) Registration and Institutional Membership fee.

On receipt of the above, the institution’s application will be reviewed by Council for fulfillment of the conditions. Successful applicant institutions/organisations, following agreement and approval by the board and the Council, will be issued official Institutional Membership Certificate and letter of accreditation as ICEN Accredited Institutional Member. Only accepted Institutional Members may be eligible to all the benefits of Membership.

ICEN Accredited Institutional Members

ICEN accredited Institutional Members are licenced to train practitioners and students to lead in a world where nations are increasingly linked in matters of economic development, environment, policy, business and commerce, and the development and sharing of human and natural resources. Enquiries will be accepted at any time throughout the year.

ICEN Integrity

Institutional Members of the ICEN are the primary sources of advanced training for Chartered Economists practitioners in their respective states or regions. These institutions prepare practitioners for the global workplace of the 21st Century by combining multidisciplinary, economic policy-oriented programmes, inter-regional studies with career development. As the awarding and regulatory body, ICEN approves the tutors and or trainers/lecturers and sits on the examination board. Institutional/Organizational Members must therefore protect their integrity and be confident of their reputations by producing diverse, well-trained, competent and sophisticated Chartered Economists practitioners, many of whom might be (if not already) holding senior leadership/executive positions in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors throughout Nigeria and the entire world.

Corporate Membership

Fellow Chartered Economists (FCE)

To qualify as a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Economists Nigeria (ICEN), a person must have been an Associate of the Institute with ACE qualification, and having been found to have demonstrated sound understandings in economics for not less than (7-10) years, with proven evidence of resourceful contributions to the growth and development of Nigeria, in addition to the Institute’s ethics, ideals and goals; morally, academically, professionally and perhaps, financially.

In the opinions of the Director-General and the President of the Institute, certain persons with proven ability, integrity and sound industrial practice in senior management level in public and private sector, senior lecturers or professors in academics are also awarded “fellowship status”. This is intended to make them a role-model for other members to emulate their hard work and quality, thereby making the Institute Epitome of Quality recognition. In the same consideration, the founding members, also qualifies to be accorded the fellowship status as a “reserved right”, for which they are so acknowledged and are described.

Admission conditions

Candidates shall:

  1. be or have been in employment (Senior Executive level) for an aggregate of at least seven years or more;

  2. be willing and able to promote, contribute to, and actively support the mission and objectives of the professional body;

  3. hold Associate of ICEN for like 7 to 10 years as Chartered Economist;

  4. hold a Master Degree or a PhD in social sciences or in Diplomacy; and

  5. not permit first degree or postgraduate diploma holder to fill this online application form.

  6. hold fellow certificate of ICAN, ANAN, CITN, CIBN, etc, etc, etc……….

Fellows of ICEN safeguard promote and protect the integrity of the professional body and the profession, The Economics.

Associate Chartered Economists (ACE)

The Associate of the Institute can only be acquired through the successful completion of all the stages of the Institute’s professional examinations, from the foundation level to the professional examination level. On completion, the Board of the Institute, led by its Director General/Chief Executive officer, shall formally present the graduates of the Institute for inductions as members to the President of the Institute, after admission of Oaths of Allegiance on them. Prior the commencement of the ACE examinations, over 2000 graduates with HND in management related disciplines, or B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D in Economics and other related management disciplines, have been inducted to date as the pioneer members of ACE holders; after conducting character assessments and academic quality assessments, through a comprehensive interview on individual persons, stated at different periods.

Admission conditions:

The prospective candidate shall satisfy Council by:

  1. completing the professional Examinations of ICEN from foundation to final stage or from P1- P3 competency course;

  2. currently in a related employment (Management position or equivalent) for an aggregate of at least five years plus;

  3. willing and able to promote, contribute to and actively support the objectives of the IECN;

  4. willing and able to promote and make significant contribution to the development, advancement and professional practise of the Chartered Economist;

  5. holding a degree or Diploma of university or Polytechnic with credit pass.

  6. holding first degree in social sciences or Higher National Diploma in management courses

  7. holding postgraduate degree in other field of studies outside social sciences

  8. holding professional qualifications e.g. ICAN, ANAN, CITN, CIBN, CIA, etc, etc…….

Junior Executives Economist (JEE)

This membership is opened to persons who do not possess the academic requirement for admission into the ACE examination or conferment of Graduate Diploma membership status. Persons in this category must possess a minimum of five (5) credits at the SSCE, WASCE or GCE, including English Language, Mathematics and Economics.

Holders of University Diploma for recognized universities in Nigeria, or polytechnic, National Diploma (ND) or National Certificate of Education (NCE) from institutions certified by NUC, NBTE and National Board of Colleges of Education in Nigeria, respectively will be admitted into the JEE.

All persons registered under the JEE are to write examinations status for this level, which are in Foundation and Intermediate level. On successful completion of the JEE, certificates would be awarded, and such persons are entitled to use the letter after their names as “AEE”.

Admission conditions:

  1. Holders of AEE can proceed to the professional examination to write ACE. They would be exempted only in the foundation, but will be required to commence from the Intermediate Examination.

  2. Every person admitted into the JEE must certify the University Matriculation Examination (UME) requirements of five (5) credits at a sitting of six or more credits at two sitting, irrespective of other qualifications held.

  3. ND of approved Polytechnics and AACE Diplomas.

Students Membership
